New Delhi: Two public sector giants, National Thermal Power Corporation and Bharata Heavy Electricals Limited has decided to come together to streamline the electricity generation in the country. The joint venture, dubbed as NTPC-BHEL Power Projects Private Limited, will have equal shares of both the 'Navratna' companies.
The project, which has been in reckoning for the last seven years, aims to bring the expertise of manufacturing and supply of power plant equipments and execution of large power projects together on the common platform.
At present, India has only 78000 MW installed capacity of power generation whereas it needs around 960000 MW of power by 2030-31 to maintain the 8 per cent GDP growth rate. Only 21,180 MW is being added in the 11th plan.
Commenting on the formation of the a new company, Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde termed the initiative as a "unique step taken in the right direction". "We have taken various steps to catch the growing power demand in the country but could not increase supply situation much. That is why this initiative is here. Surely new power plants would be established in the future under this company and existing power plants could also be upgraded," said the Minister.
The certificate of incorporation of joint venture was presented to Sushil Kumar Shinde and Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Santosh Mohan Dev.
Speaking on the occasion Dev said: "It will start a new era in the power sector and will help in meeting the growing demand in the respect of fast growing economy like ours. Electricity is the basic input and is very important. But we are facing power shortages.” He also added that the high demand of power would pose good business opportunity for the company.
Chief Managing Director of NTPC Ltd T Sankaralingam also underlined the business this company could generate in the future as huge investment is expected in power sector of the country and added that more competition would curtail the cost of power generation.
